Leadership & Supervisory Skills for Women (Ft Collins Hilton Hotel)
Here's a few key concepts that I got from the conference I went to today:
Must have the 3 following skills to be an influential (persuasive) leader:
1. credibility: only credible because others believe you are credible
2. emotional connection: need to communicate according to their needs
3. logic
4 categories of people:
ENTERTAINER: talk alot about themselves, value attention (stew)
COMMANDER: bossy, "get it done"/task-oriented
FEELER: takes things personally, doesn't focus on detail, values the team
ANALYZER: quiet and reflective, black & white, must be right (stew)
*People-oriented & direct: ENTERTAINER, COMMANDER
*People-oriented & cautious: FEELER, ANALYZER
Handling conflicts-use the EASY system (conflict is ok, confrontation is not):
E: express your feelings
A: address the situation: give examples
S: say what you want --barriers: worried about loss of self-esteem or job security
Y: yes or no
*emotionally literate: being able to articulate/recognize own emotions
*we judge ourselves based on our intentions, others judge us based on our actions
*people need to feel important, therefore, remind them of their purpose
*people expect us as leaders to have a deep sense of self-awareness therefore be aware of what you value and persuade them according to what they value
*people expect us as leaders to be able to deliver bad news with diplomacy
*be sincere and don't manipulate
*seek first to understand others / synergy ("harmony")
*expect to comply with corporate culture (if they play golf, then take golf lessons)
*difficult times don't build character, it reveals character
